Farm subsidies have to stop
Rather than assisting farmers in continuing the dry-land cultivation, the government should aim at providing farmers a combination of structural adjustment assistance and technical training for diversifying into more profitable sectors.

Fully autonomous vehicle technology is useless unless it provides significant and relevant consumer benefit
Automotive technology in the first world has gone beyond plain power systems. In fact, the US defence research arm DARPA has been organising races to push technology towards fully autonomous vehicles. Stanford University’s ‘Stanley’, for example, was the first driverless car in the ‘2005 Grand Challenge’ to complete 132 miles in under seven hours at the Mojave desert in California. Volkswagen too has taken its first step by tying up with corporations like Google and India for a satellite based navigation system.

McDonald’s wakes up to calorie count
Starting next year, patrons of McDonald’s across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia can access the nutritional information of McDonald’s products on the wrapper, instead of having to visit the website of the fast foods company. The world’s largest hamburger chain, with over 31,000 restaurants globally, has decided to list the nutritional value including the calorie, fat, carbohydrate, protein and sodium intake on the packaging of most of its food items. This would help the fast food giant fight the nutritional critics who blame McDonald’s for serving unhealthy food which has led to growing rates of obesity in the United States.
Scrushy’s day out in the court again!
Richard Scrushy, the former CEO of the medical rehabilitation chain, HealthSouth, has been indicted on federal charges, over his role in public corruption, at the time of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman’s administration, from 1999 to 2003. Siegelman finds himself in murky waters, due to his role (with many others) in conspiring to exchange official actions for huge bribes with businessmen like Scrushy. Interestingly, Scrushy was the first CEO to be accused of violating the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley law, and was subsequently acquitted by a federal jury in a $2.7 billion comprehensive accounting fraud.

Apollo launches a new mission-IIPM News
The man’s vision has been unmistakable, starting with a name like that for a health care group. Much like the Apollo 11 mission lodging man’s first steps on the moon, Dr. P. C. Reddy’s Apollo group is making a concerted move towards establishing a literal ‘world-class’ presence, not content with being the single largest private health group of Asia.

If you thought 3G in mobile phones is the in thing, you might look outdated very soon. In a recent 4G master move, the $5 billion Qualcomm has spent $805 million to buy Flarion Technologies. For the newly inducted, Flarion owns Flash OFDM the most path-breaking ‘killer’ technology to hit mobile communication this decade that is expected to push the 3G market to extinction, by providing data speeds that are 10 times faster. According to Flarion’s Vice President, Ronny Haraldsvik, Flash’s “efficient use of radio spectrum” is its biggest innovation. Qualcomm straddles the CDMA platform as the clear leader; and with the Flash technology leap, needs to now convince mobile service providers to switch over from GSM platforms. At the moment, five GSM phones are sold for every CDMA phone sold in the market totalling 1.2 billion connections. But unfortunately, the biggest hitch for Qualcomm is its killing dependence on the to-be-merged Sprint-Nextel entity the largest mobile service provider in the US to kick start and deliver phone services using the Flash technology.

Squaring it off one more time please
What you measure is what you get. Senior executives understand that their organization’s measurement system strongly affects the behavior of managers and employees. Executives also understand that traditional financial accounting measures like return on investment and earnings per share can give misleading signals: Such measures worked well for the industrial era, but they are out of step with the skills and competencies companies are trying to master today.
